Mediators Without Borders International Panel
Our Oct 19 International Breakfast featured President & CEO of Mediators Beyond Borders International, Prabha Sankaranarayan. Ms. Sankaranarayan spoke of previous and current projects in countries ranging from the Philippines, Liberia, South Thailand, and even local communities such as Pittsburgh, PA.
Mediators Beyond Borders is an international non-governmental organization whose mission is to build local skills for peace and promote mediation worldwide.
Ms. Sankaranarayan spoke of previous and current projects in countries ranging from the Philippines, Liberia, South Thailand, and even local communities such as Pittsburgh, PA. What differentiates MBBI is their use of Conflict Transformation Methods and their emphasis on a people-driven model, and a trauma-informed approach to peace-building. Their belief is that though there’s importance in the global context of peace-building at the government and diplomat level, for peace to last, there must be engagement on every level of the community.
MBBI’s relationships with these communities are initiated through invitations from local individuals and partnership with organizations. They’ve found that a great majority of those advocating for change are women. The process and needs of their projects vary, though, they often include the evaluation of current resources and development and implementation of training programs. MBBI recognizes the differences in each of these communities’ populations, histories and difficulties therefore they contextualize their work to meet local needs. They refer to themselves a “global network of local practitioners” with their primary goal being to “create a space to transform conflicts.”
Alongside its partners–now including Rotary Club of New York, after signing an MOU at the end of this meeting–MBBI believes that “peace is a process” and that “if we can do something different, we can make a difference.”
